We met at Briarwood @ 5pm and arrived at camp around 7 pm.
Our campsite was at the pioneer campground ($30 per night).
Pros – isolated from the rest of the camp ground, fire ring already available, adorondak shelter available (we camped in tents), convenient to trails, out house available.
Cons – no running water and they discouraged us from getting water from the conventional camp sites so bring own water.
Supper – chili w/ beans, bread, fruit
B’fast – breakfast burritos
Lunch – sandwiches
After eating breakfast and breaking camp, we drove to the visitor center at the trail head. I advise anyone taking this trip to get there early as they only allow 100 people into the gorge trail daily, first come first serve, no reservations. There are a total of 500 steps up and down into the gorge. The first river crossing is fairly difficult. There is a fairly long jump between two of the rocks crossing the river, only 2 of the scouts actually made the jump without getting wet. The entire trail is rocky and parts are steep and slippery. 2 Scouts did not make the entire trip. The hike took a total of about 3.5 hours round trip. We met the parents for pick up at Herman C. Michael park because the church was having a dinner.
