Early Saturday morning, the 2 patrols served a cold breakfast of bagels and cereal along with fruit. Shortly afterwards, the entire group went over safety requirements for the tubing/water park led by scoutmaster Charlie B. Each scout and adult was assigned a "buddy" as check system for the entire time on the water. Weather conditions were sunny and warm.
After arriving at the Helen Tubing Company, we had a short ride to the entry point where we received our tube and life jacket. We immediately plunged into the Chattahoochee River. Beautiful scenery surrounded us with low mountains in the background and leaning trees and exposed rock along the banks. Sometimes our tubes were caught on rocks, while other times we raced through small rapids and steep inclines. Wildlife spotted by our group included several snakes (including a fake one that freaked several scouts out) and a possum.
The adventure of day belonged to Ryan E. and Scott W. While tubing behind the others, Ryan's tube ruptured leaving him a deflated piece of plastic. The boys tried fitting into one tube going over rapids and other obstacles for at least a half an hour, but soon realized this wasn't going to work. Knowing that the other scouts were far ahead, the boys walked out of the river and flagged down a Helen Tubing Company bus which took them back to the water park. There, they met up with the rest of group. Congratulations to both boys for using the buddy system well and keeping cool heads. Total time on river was 1.5 hours.
While drying out, Troop 537 gathered together to have a sandwich lunch outside the water park. A short summer thunderstorm exploded on us and we finished our lunches in our vehicles. Within minutes, the storm was over, and we entered the water park for our afternoon fun. Large water slides entertained us and a slow circular river of water cooled us off during the afternoon sun. Very few wanted to leave, but all were happily expecting a hot meal of Hamburger Helper at the campsite. One thing that was impressive - scouts can cook some excellent meals for the adults and themselves! The scouts' menu ended with s'mores and cobbler for dessert. The day finished with all participants gathered around a campfire for stories and skits. We entered our tents exhausted, but satisfied.
Sunday morning began early with hot breakfast of eggs, cheese, bacon, and hash browns cooked in skillets or dutch ovens. After cleaning and packing our gear, a short worship service was held. We also celebrated Ryan C's birthday with cupcakes. We left the campground mid-morning and arrive in Watkinsville at noon. Everyone had great time!
Officers for the trip: Harry B as SPL, Seth W and Matt P as PL's.
