The trip started as a non-starter..... for a day. The much welcomed snow caused the one day delay of the trip due to driving conditions. But at 3:00 pm on Saturday Feb 13th the group along with 15 skiers from Troop 149 was off for Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden, NC. After a short stop at a South Carolina rest stop for a brown bag dinner, the group arrived at the church about 6:45 pm. Quickly set up on the church foyer and spare rooms, our SPL David B. along with Lee D. from T149 lined out the order of events, and Dr D. spent the the next hour or so with Merit Badge training and ski/lift instruction. The evening concluded with games, free time and a scary story or two courtesy of Paul M. Lights were out fairly early, and the troop settled in for an (short) evening of sleeping while snow flurries whirled (outside the window.)
At 05:30 the troop awoke, packed up and proceeded with the continental breakfast. By just before 7:00 we thanked our gracious host and headed out the door. 08:00 found us trying on boots, skis, (watch those poles), etc. and by 09:00 we we on the slopes for a group lesson and trips up the magic carpet and down the bunny slope! The weather was right at 20* with a wind chill of about 10*, but the scouts were bundled up with coats, bibs, gloves, goggles and a shiny helmet that only a mother (and the BSA) could love! Shortly after, the clouds broke and revealed the most beautiful day on sunny slopes with the temperature quickly climbing. The snow was as good as you could ever hope for, about 2" had fallen through the night!
Scouts were paired with a buddy and began quickly mastering the slopes of Wolf Ridge. Two lifts were busy and and some quickly progressed to more advanced levels of skiing and snowboarding. Instruction and help was available to those that needed or wanted it, but most were eager to be off with their buddy! Base camp was manned and run by two very experienced and able bodied adults, Charlie B. and Ben B. Lunch break came about 11:30, with a trip into the lodge for cheeseburgers, etc. and then right back out to the snow. Several scouts completed items on the merit badge in the afternoon.
Last trip up the lift was at 3:30, gear turn in followed with a group debrief, picture and road plan and off we went at just after 4:00pm. Just in time, as the snow had started to fall again. A stop at the Golden Corral in Hendersonville for our Valentines Day dinner made a huge dent in their buffet (especially the desert line) and made for a nice ending to the day. An uneventful drive home had us arriving at Friendship Presbyterian at 9:00pm.
Rumor has it that a few human snowballs were witnessed, but no documentation exists! Stories on the other hand, are something you won't want to miss. No serious injuries to body or ego followed the proud Troop 537 back to Watkinsville, and with that we close the books on a great experience.
