Summer Camp, Camp Rainey Mountain, 2010, Page #1 SUNDAY, July 4th
Troop 537 assembled at Herman C Michael Park at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.  After packing the trailer, we hit the road and made the drive to Clayton, then had a short lunch at Wendy’s and Burger King (some of us ate at both!).  We arrived at Camp Rainey Mountain at 12:40 and were cleared through medical and admin check-in by 1:30, hastened by the preparation of our adult leaders and being FIRST to sign in (thanks, Giles).  Ethan was assigned as our Troop Guide.  We took a quick tour around camp and ended at Gordon campsite to settle in.   Scott B and Nick G assigned tents by rank.  Platform tents lined the campsite on both sides for 20 yards.  There is a break in the middle where a metal garage cover serves as shelter for several picnic tables, and a gang sink is located a few yards further.  The campsite makes an abrupt turn and continues with tents on both sides for another 30 yards.  At 6:15p.m., after forming into ranks on the parade field, we enjoyed our first meal in the mess hall.  Afterward, Scouts returned to the camp to wait for the evening campfire.  At 9:00 the entire camp of approximately 870 Scouts arrived at the amphitheater for the week’s opening campfire, flag retirement, and fireworks to celebrate the 4th of July.  Lance Corporal Craig K (Eagle Scout from Troop 149 and Ben B participated in the flag retirement.  We returned to Gordon for a very cool night’s rest.

MONDAY, July 5th
A small crew of mile swimmers departed Gordon at 5:30 a.m. for practice.  The balance arose at 6:30 and left for breakfast formation and chow at 7:15, as would be the practice throughout the week.  Wesley P. departed for SCUBA training at Scoutland, and we wouldn’t see him again until Tuesday afternoon.  Scott B turned over SPL duties to Nick G while training for BSA Lifeguard.  Seth W, Alex M, Chris D, and Charles B carried all of their worldly possessions to the Ballard cabin to begin their Gold Rush adventure.  Merit badge classes took up the remainder of the day.  We had another cool night of rest.

TUESDAY, July 6th
Everyone dove into working on merit badges.  Tom W went diving with Wesley P at Scoutland.  Despite poor underwater visibility, Wesley P completed his training.  The Scout Skills team was doing well until the fire building exercise; afterwards they issued the following statement to the press, “We did a good job and scored a moral victory, you should have been there”.  The weather turned much warmer.  Ultimate Frisbee games spontaneously formed each evening prior to dinner.

WEDNESDAY, July 7th
As classes continued, the weather turned quite hot.  We had a few cases of minor dehydration, solved by lots of water and a bit of rest.  The Gold Rush crew came out of the hills for a shower; WOW, did they need a shower!  Later, the Order of the Arrow hosted a campfire, and each of the 34 Troops at CRM were invited to put on a skit.  The OA took the stage for a rousing reminder of OA responsibility and impressive campfire lighting.  MOWOGO Chapter Chief was canoed across Lake Taccoa with a huge torch used to start the fire. The evening was cool and good for sleep.
