Cooking / Fishing Campout, May 27-29, 2011

On Friday May 27, 2011, 3 adults and multiple new scouts and 2 older scouts serving as Patrol leaders for the first time left Briarwood Baptist for the the short trip to Bishop Farms here in Oconee County for a weekend of camping cooking and fishing and learning scout skills. For many of these young scouts this was there first campout.
We arrived at Bishop Farms and the two patrols worked together to setup one shelter and then setup there personal tents. Once that was done a campfire was started and dinner was prepared. Most of the younger scouts had served as shoppers for this trip. Also for many of them it was there first opportunity at camping with the troop. After dinner we discussed the plans for the weekend and then turned in early with Taps being played by our Troop Bugler.
We awoke the next morning to prepare breakfast and also to the sounds of Reveille.  Mr Bedell and Charles B arrived to begin instruction for the younger scouts to earn their Totin' Chip.  After breakfast we had a Flag ceremony with the younger scouts leading this.  Most of the morning was spent on Totin' chip work and an axe yard was setup.  The young men did well with this and had accomplished most of it before lunch.
The two patrols then went about preparing lunch.  Part of the
purpose of this campout was to expose them to different outdoor cooking methods and therefore every meal had to be a hot one.  The meals varied from gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches to Dutch oven pizzas at lunch.  One of the patrols for the evening meal had chicken rice casserole in dutch oven,  hot rolls,  corn cobbler, green beans, and fruit cobbler for dessert.
The boys had plenty of free time for fishing as well.  Also the afternoon was spent with plant and animal identification and working on discussing camping skills.  After supper a somewhat vigorous soccer game picked up.
Sunday morning came around.  Breakfast was prepared and the camp was broken down and area cleaned.  A Scout's own Worship service was lead by the our troop's Chaplain's Aide.  We loaded back up for the short drive back to Herman C Michael Park where the boys were picked up. The goals for the weekend were all meet a good deal of advancement work was done for the new scouts with them having more confidence in
their outdoor cooking and camping skills.
For the two older scouts they got to implement the leadership skills they had been learning from their time in the troop and learn from this experience to be even better leaders.  Most of all everyone had fun and was ready to go camping again.
